Self-portrait of the photographer.

I'm an ER physician by profession with a passion for photography.

My affection for photography developed in 1984 during a month-long trip to Europe; I was able to use an SLR camera for the first time & found it was more satisfying, even though more challenging, to choose my own settings rather than just pointing & shooting.  In the years since that trip, my passion for wildlife & scenic photography grew; but it wasn't until 2002 that my artistic horizons expanded once again to include portrait photography.  For me, although I still enjoy them immensely, nothing in wildlife or scenic photography compares to seeing the smiles on people's faces when they see the images I've helped to create for them.

The evolution of the digital SLR aided in my quest to become proficient in doing manual exposures, portrait lighting, & Photoshop techniques.  Through seminars & workshops combined with lots of reading & practice, I've honed both my photographic & Photoshop abilities to the point where the fruits of my hobby are now salable.

I started Portraits à la Carte studio in 2011 with the intent of making professional images & prints available to the public at 1/3 the cost of bigger studios while earning some money to pay for my hobby.  I became a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals in 2011, started the Findlay Photography Club in 2012, & now teach basic manual photography workshops, a resource I wish I had when I was starting out.
